Make an Impact with these Dining Room Updates

Dining rooms may be the easiest room to give a refreshing makeover. The d├ęcor can be versatile, inexpensive, seasonal, and fun to mix up.

Any room looks better with a fresh coat of paint, and dining rooms can be an easy project given that they're generally smaller rooms with straightforward dimensions. Deep grays or bold (not necessarily bright) colors can add character and elegance without overcommitting to a large room or living area. Accent the room, and new wall color, with seat cushions, as well as a few paintings, pictures, or wall hangings.

Consider replacing the dining room table; go from rectangle to square or circular, or elevate with a counter-height dining set. Even simply replacing the chairs can add a new air to the room. If the room is large enough, add a bar (cart) or buffet (which can also include a bar). A buffet is a great place to showcase interesting bowls, pitchers, or glassware.

Area Rug

The right area rug adds warmth and puts the finishing touch on any space. When selecting a dining room rug, keep this tip in mind: The rug should extend 18 to 24 inches beyond the table on all sides to allow each chair's four legs to remain on the rug when the chair is pulled away from the table.

Little Touches

Switch out the table runner or tablecloth with a completely different pattern or color, then add accompanying cloth napkins or placemats. Candles can be anything from hurricane holders and pillars to tea light lanterns and votives. Add a unique vase or bowl as a centerpiece with simple bright fruit, succulents, or tall unique silk flowers.

Lastly, don't forget the lighting. Updating the chandelier or ceiling fixtures can change the entire look, as well as affect the actual brightness of the room.
